Race against Waste

The Race against Waste campaign is aimed at helping small to medium businesses implement sustainable waste practices in their workplaces. The briefing took place on March 8th at County Hall in Dun Laoghaire and was well attended by a variety of local business. Speakers were heard from Race against Waste, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and Enterprise Ireland. Stands were also provided by companies such as Repak, Greenstar and Micropro Computers for further information on waste management and environmentally friendly hardware. The seminar provided practical advice to businesses on how to change their waste practices. Good waste management practice saves money and can also improve staff morale. Almost 2.3 million tonnes of household and commercial waste were generated in Ireland in 2001, an increase of almost a third in three years. This cannot be sustained. It places severe pressure on our environment and our waste management services. Landfill is the main waste disposal route but we are running out of landfill space.
