At this year’s DLR County Chamber Business Awards Gala, Michael Byrne, CEO of Core Credit Union, was celebrated as the Person of the Year 2025, recognising his outstanding contribution to business, community, and civic life across Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown.
The Person of the Year Award honours individuals who lead not for personal recognition, but out of a genuine commitment to making our county a better place to live, work, and do business. Michael Byrne exemplifies that spirit.
Since becoming CEO of Core Credit Union in 2011, Michael has demonstrated exceptional leadership and vision. He successfully brought together a number of local Credit Unions – Shankill, Ballybrack, Dún Laoghaire, Sallynoggin, Monkstown Farm, Foxrock, and Dalkey — and most recently welcomed Greystones into the fold. His goal was simple yet powerful: to modernise and strengthen the Credit Union movement while keeping its community-first ethos at its heart.
Under his guidance, Core Credit Union has expanded its services to include current accounts, mortgages, insurance products, and digital banking, and introduced Ireland’s first Mobile Credit Union vehicle – a brilliant initiative that brings financial services to local events and young people across the county.
Michael’s influence extends beyond the county. He serves as a Director of the Irish League of Credit Unions, a Member of the Institute of Directors, and was appointed by the Minister for Finance to the Credit Union Advisory Committee, where he helps shape national policy for the sector. He also co-founded the All-Ireland Credit Union Awards, recognising the dedication of staff and volunteers across the country.
What truly sets Michael apart is his deep and constant commitment to the community. Under his leadership, Core Credit Union has been a proud supporter of the Dún Laoghaire St Patrick’s Day Parade, Dalkey Lobster Festival, Rathmichael Fête, local GAA family days, schools, sports clubs, and charities throughout the county. Through initiatives like school quizzes and educational roadshows, Core Credit Union continues to empower, educate, and connect people of all ages.
Michael Byrne exemplifies what community leadership looks like – visionary, compassionate, and grounded in service. His work has strengthened both the financial wellbeing and social fabric of Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown and beyond.
