Emerging from Lockdown and looking forward to a bright future: Sallynoggin College of Further Education congratulates the class of 2020!

Times have been challenging for everyone in Ireland since March as we all pulled together to protect one and other. At SCFE there were many disappointments as annual highlights like the Performing Arts and Musical Theatre Event in the Lexicon Theatre, The Fashion Show and Floristry exhibition which are public events held in the college and the Art and Photography exhibition in the Lexicon library were all cancelled. However, the show continued behind the scenes with teachers and students working hard to complete their courses remotely. Happily, almost all of our students were able to successfully complete their award and gain their qualification allowing them to progress to university, further study or into employment. We are sending big congratulation to all of this year’s graduates and are preparing to open our doors to new and returning students in September 2020.

SCFE Mature Students:  Returning to Education can be a Life Changing Experience

Making the decision to return to education can be a daunting experience.  During the current Covid 19 related restrictions many of us are re-evaluating our lifestyle and work life balance.   For some this will be an opportunity to rethink career choices and perhaps move toward reskilling in a vocational area that reflects an aspect of life that they feel passionate about or a natural skill or ability that has remained hidden or undervalued in their current work.

SCFE has a strong history of supporting mature students in realising their ambition and achieving their goals in education and career development, a large percentage of our students are mature students from a vast range of backgrounds.  Financial supports such as VTOS and BTEA are available for students who are in receipt of Social Protection payments and our dedicated Guidance service is available to support learners with career choices. One of our students explains her experience in a recent article by Aontas; The Voice of Adult Learning

“School and I were never friends! It was difficult at the start, learning how to use a computer, having limited knowledge on how to use it. The second day I left a class crying because I was so slow at typing compared to the younger ones. But with guidance from my fellow students and encouragement from my tutors, I found my way through and realised my passion for learning that I never knew I had”
